Chili Cook-Off a Winner for St. Auggie’s

Chili Winner

A self-proclaimed “non-cooker” ran away with the Best in Chili prize at St. Augustine’s first Chili Cook-Off on Friday, November 7, 2014. Using a 12-page recipe, Miss Jeanie marinated, stirred, chopped, and stewed to beat out a field of expert church cooks. The prize:  a chef’s hat and tool belt. Hopefully, Miss Jeanie will now see herself as an authentic “cooker,” and the congregation – and her husband – will be treated to many more gourmet dishes to come.

Not that food was the only focus at the first-time event for the church. We enjoyed fellowship, eating, singing, and ghost-story-telling around the fire pit with folks from ages six to sixty-plus.

St. Augustine’s is distinguished for its welcoming family spirit. Souls walked away from this fall Friday night event in this gorgeous home, knowing they are part of something greater than themselves.  If you are looking for a church to call “family,” then consider visiting St. Augustine’s this coming Sunday.

St. Augustine’s Men’s Group Starts Monday, November 10th

Men's GroupUnder the direction of Fr. Ric Bowser, St. Augustine’s is beginning a men’s group. The group will not be having a “Bible study” per se as much as looking at men’s issues and ways of supporting one another. The group will be using the books, “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge and “On the Threshold of Transformation,” by Richard Rohr.

The first meeting is at Panera Bread on Maxtown Rd on Monday, November 10th, at 7:00.  The group will also meet on December 8th. Beginning in January, the men’s group will meet twice a month. Dates will be posted in December.

All men are welcome. If you have questions, contact Fr. Ric by clicking here.

Coats for Kids – A Story of Giving by Ann Rees

Coats for KidsMy name is Ann Rees, and I live in northwest Ohio, near Van Wert, OH.  I have discovered a fun and valuable way to fulfill some of my Christian giving.  During August each year, two intersecting highways in our area, share a huge garage sale blowout week-end.  This opens up hundreds of individual sales for the locals, such as myself to explore.  I spent two afternoons scouring these sales for children’s coats.I approximately 3-4 hours,  I scored over 30 coats and several quilted vests.  I managed to do all this for an average of under $3 per coat or vest.  Now, the question is how to distribute all of these.  Luckily, I have a cousin, Kevin Maney, who is an Anglican priest.  After I heavily laundered these coats, my husband and I delivered them to Fr. Kevin, who is helping to see that these get into the hands of those who need them  the most.  I really love searching for these bargains, and I feel God’s hand in the entire experience, for me, the children who benefit, and of course, Father Maney.

Take Them a Meal

A member of our church is facing surgery this week and a lengthy recovery period. Will you help provide meals over the next few weeks?  Beth Buehler is coordinating this effort and is using Take Them a Meal for scheduling. Following are details on how to participate. Thanks go to those who have provided food to a couple with a huge, grateful heart.

Do you have a day over the next several weeks that you could take a meal to the Dowlings?  We will again use the “Take Them a Meal” website to coordinate the process!

Judy said that 2-3 meals per week would be very helpful and that you should call her to schedule what time to deliver the meal on that day.

 There are no dietary restrictions.

Here is how you access their account:

 Go to the website: takethemameal.com

Enter last name:  Dowling

Enter password:  1014

Click on date(s) to provide meals and enter the information

Please don’t hesitate to call or email with any questions or suggestions!

 Thanks for helping,

 Beth

Fr. Kevin Maney: Lessons from the Throne Room

Today is All Saints Sunday, the day when we celebrate the communion of saints, both those Christians who have died in the Lord (the Church Triumphant) and those of us who are living and who labor in the Lord’s power as his faithful kingdom workers (the Church Militant). So why do we celebrate a day like today? This is what I want us to look at briefly this morning.

Fr. Kevin Maney: What Kind of Gospel Are You Living and Preaching

This morning I want us to take a hard look at our perceptions of the gospel to see if we think and behave as people who really do have Good News or whether we think and behave like people who grimly go through life trying to live up to a standard that is basically out of our reach but which we try to achieve anyway because we are terrified of what might happen to us if we don’t. This is important to us, not only for our psychological well being but also because each of us is called by our Lord to proclaim the gospel to the world, i.e., to the folks around us with whom we live and interact. What Good News could we offer, for example, to the young woman featured in yesterday’s Dispatch who has terminal brain cancer?

Fr. Ron Feister: A Sporting Look at Scriptures

It is Sunday and if you watch any television, you know that this is either NFL Sunday or Football Sunday. The games start early and last into the evening. I am not a big sports fan, usually don’t watch the games, but I have noticed an interesting phenomenon. Before each game there is at least one, but many times several, “experts” who provide a commentary or breakdown of what to expect and then following the game, the same experts re-tell what has happened during the game. In both cases we are treated to a review of the plays, the statistics, the players, and the rankings.

Visit Worthington Christian Village to Give of Yourself

Our friends on the 6th Floor at Worthington Christian Village look forward to our monthly visits. We spend time asking about their current circumstances, and we reminisce with them about life gone by. If you have a few minutes and are a good listener, you will be perfect for this ministry. Join us at 2:00 at Worthington Christian Village this coming Sunday. We’ll meet in the lobby and  go upstairs together.  You will be blessed as you give a blessing to one of God’s children.
